I heard yesterday ... [More:]... that a good friend of mine has terminal cancer. He had lung cancer about 25 years ago (he's never smoked) and came through that. Recently he's been retaining fluid and tests revealed he had renal (kidney) cell carcinoma.

He went into hospital yesterday so they could drain fluid before operating to remove the kidney, but a scan and an ECG revealed that the cancer has metastasised to his heart. There is nothing they can do for him, as his organs are starting to fail.

His wife is now trying to decide whether he should go into hospice care or come home, to be cared for there.

They've been close friends of mine for nearly 30 years. Lovely, kind, good people, devout Christians who do so much for other people. This seems so unfair.

He is 55.

Fuck cancer.

When young sometimes it seems that old people, or at least some of them, are just so miserable. As I age, I am thinking that while some people get angry with their own aging a lot of it comes from the burden of loss of all the ones around us who did not make it as far as we have. Each year we carry the memories of more people gone to soon from our lives.

All I can do is try to hold on to the good memories and try to forget the unfairness of it all.

Much love my friend.

Each year we carry the memories of more people gone to soon from our lives.

That is such an accurate way of describing it. When people are taken from us at a young(ish) age, it weighs heavily for longer on those who remain and remember them.
