21 October 2014

Let's Make a Deal: Halloween Candy Edition! I went to Target yesterday and was blown away by the sheer tonnage of Halloween candy. Several aisles of huge bags, filled with So Much Candy. I loved it.

Pretend you're 10 years old again and tell what you'd keep and what you'd try to trade away to your brother or sister, from your trick-or-treat stash.
[More:]
KEEP: M & M's, Milky Ways, Starburst, Skittles

TRADE: Mounds, Almond Joy, boxes of raisins or other sad attempts at healthy snacking, those mysterious taffy bits wrapped in orange and black wax paper with no writing.

Trade: Milk Duds, Almond Joy, mint chocolate.

Keep: TOOTSIE ROLLS. I am a tootsie roll fool. Especially with the different flavors.

I miss circus peanuts. Do they even sell those anymore?

I bought our candy yesterday (Twix, Smarties, and Milky Way Simply Caramel)... I hope I get a jewel in my crown for every day I don't rip the bags open and eat it myself.

Keep: Reeses and Mounds are my favorites (I love anything with peanut butter or coconut -- Zagnuts and Chico Sticks are the bomb!), Charleston Chews (especially strawberry), Twizzlers, Twix, Kit Kat, Nestle Crunch (or its evil twin Krackle), atomic fire balls. Milky Way and Three Musketeers are okay, but second string.

Trade: Anything with nuts (which I like by themselves, but not usually in stuff like candy or cookies); anything mint (which I'll eat, but I'm not a fan); Dark chocolate (which I like more now); the inevitable apple from Mrs. Palmer, our sixth grade science teacher who lived in the neighborhood and incubated abandoned duck eggs in her garage (she once showed me where I'd signed her visitor's book twenty plus years before, as a then trickortreater).

(pinky-- my mom always hid her pre-Halloween stash, but I could always find it. ;)

I'm just gonna leave this here: Halloween Safety Education Film, 1977

I feel fairly certain I saw this film as a kid. I don't remember anything in it specifically, but I do recall being extremely anxious about accepting any candy that wasn't a wrapped, commercial product. I mean anxious, like pathological. I would examine each piece of candy for pinpricks showing where the needle inserted the deadly poison. I wish I were joking.

One thing that makes me sad is the scene where the mom and kid are sorting the candy and throwing out anything that doesn't look like it came off an assembly line. After seeing this movie (or hearing/seeing some similarly hysterical thing), I was unable to calmly enjoy trick or treat. WHen I was ages 7-10, I lived in a really interesting old town on the Jersey Shore, a Victorian neighborhood where a lot of the residents were in their 70s and 80s or even older. They obviously grew up in a really different era, and when Halloween came, they were sometimes mentally back in the 1930s-50s. So a lot of people went to the trouble to make homemade cookies, popcorn balls, caramel corn and other awesome, and very loving, homemade treats. Thanks to stuff like this fussy movie, I was too paranoid to eat any of them. I just threw them out. I recall my mom trying to convince me they were probably fine, but whatever I heard at school, at the time, was gospel to me.

It makes me sad today to think about these 100% nice older folks baking and cooking for hours to get ready for Halloween, making treats that were completely cool and totally different than the usual commercial stuff, and little me thoroughly freaked out by fear-inducing American media like this. And even more sad to understand the fear was totally unfounded, the threats of poison candy never actually real.

So today, I would keep any homemade treat. I also remember the little twists of 10 pennies in a piece of wax paper with a ribbon, and the pencils, and marshmallows, and stuff we'd consider "odd" today. I'm glad I got a little taste of Halloween before it was an aisle in CVS.

I always kept the chocolate and traded away the (yuck) candy corn.

Today I ripped open the bag of snickers meant for the kiddies and ate four "fun sized".....it doesn't work to get the stuff too early.

I'm not ashamed. Boo!
